When Is Breathwork Not Suitable?

While breathwork is a safe and effective tool for many, there are some contraindications to consider:

  • Pregnancy (any stage)
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Detached retina or glaucoma
  • Cardiovascular diseases (e.g., angina, heart attack, or stroke)
  • Severe asthma (mild asthma can be discussed; bring your inhaler)
  • Aneurysm of any kind
  • Kidney disease
  • Epilepsy or a history of seizures
  • Use of medications that alter brain structure (e.g., antidepressants, anti-anxiety meds)
  • Active recreational drug use
  • Recent surgeries, stitches, or injuries
  • Uncontrolled thyroid conditions
  • Diagnosis of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or other psychiatric disorders
  • Hospitalization for psychiatric or emotional crises in the past 10 years
  • Severe psychosomatic conditions
  • Severe PTSD or trauma (please discuss adjustments beforehand)
  • Hyperventilation or anxiety attacks (please discuss adjustments beforehand)
